People
Before Politics

Joel M. Spitzer has a lot to give–to the community, to his family, and to the great state of Ohio. That’s what inspired him to go into education, it’s what led him to attend law school, and it’s what has inspired him to run for public office. And as your State Senator, Joel will give everything he’s got.

A lifelong resident of Ohio, Joel now lives in Lewis Center, Ohio with his wife and their four children. As a parent, he tries to lead by example to teach them the importance of generosity and kindness and the value of hard work and sacrifice.

Joel has been working hard since the age of 15 when he started his first job bagging groceries at a Geyers New Market in Bucyrus, Ohio. Without the stability and support of a traditional family, he had no choice but to persevere. By working part-time jobs, earning scholarships, and joining the Air Force, he was able to put himself not only through college (at The Ohio State University), but grad school, and eventually law school.

How much of a difference can one person really make? It’s easy to get discouraged. But no one knows better than Joel Spitzer the enormous impact one person can truly have. Whether it be on a child, a community, or a state. He wouldn’t be where he is today had it not been for the individuals that helped him along the way. Having grown up in foster care, he will always be grateful for the caring individuals who welcomed him into their homes and the kindness of teachers who mentored him along the way.

With a desire to help others the way he had been helped, Joel was quite naturally drawn to the field of education. After earning his Master’s in Education Administration from Wright State University, he went to work in schools, serving as Dean of Students for Olentangy Orange High School. It’s this firsthand experience that has contributed to his strong belief that public education does work, and that’s why it’s imperative that we invest in it.

But Joel felt there was still more he could do, so he enrolled in law school and earned his J.D. from the University of Dayton. He felt that as an attorney he could effectuate change on a larger scale and provide for a greater platform for giving.

Joel is always looking to improve himself and the community–always in search of his next move. He is currently a PhD candidate in School Finance at the University of Dayton. He’s also in his 3rd term serving as Orange Township’s Fiscal Officer. And now, he is ready to take the next step in his journey. As your Senator, he will work tirelessly to promote positive change and to empower others. Joel Spitzer will put people before politics. That’s a promise.

Affordable College Education

“Higher education should be for everyone, not only the wealthy. We need to make a college education more affordable. Not just tuition but all of the costs associated with attending college.”

Tax Reform

“We need real tax reform–a tax code that will work more profitably for small businesses who can return that money to their employees. We need local property tax relief. Property taxes are outpacing inflation and homeowners.”

Relief for Farmers

“Farmers are the backbone of America and yet they are all too often a forgotten group in today’s society. We must provide additional relief for farmers and farmland owners.”

Opiate Crisis

“We are at a critical point in addressing drug addiction. We need immediate and direct local assistance in dealing with this crisis. And doctors and pharmaceutical companies must be held accountable for their role in it.”

Senior Planning

“As a nation, we are failing when it comes to caring and providing for our senior citizens. We must do more for this generation."

Public Education Funding

"It is imperative that we invest in a strong public education system. Public schools are still outperforming (non- parochial) charter schools. We must also support our teachers, and in doing so we put Ohio students in the best possible position to excel."
